Two Halifax County Sheriff’s Office deputies have been released from medical care after a crash Wednesday with a suspect sought in a Nash County carjacking.

Captain Scott Hall said the suspect is in serious condition at a trauma unit after being ejected from the carjacking victim’s pickup.

Hall said Halifax deputies received information from Nash County around 5 p.m. of a violent assault and carjacking that occurred at a business near the 141 mile marker. It is believed the carjacking victim, who was transported to UNC Nash for treatment of head injuries, was elderly.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect, who has yet to be named, driving the truck northbound on Interstate 95.

Halifax County deputies spotted the stolen vehicle on I-95 and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The suspect left the interstate at exit 173 in Roanoke Rapids and led law enforcement through the Roanoke Rapids area for several miles before going into Weldon on Highway 158.

The suspect collided with two deputies, one driving an SUV and the other a Charger. The deputies, whose names the sheriff’s office aren’t releasing, sustained injuries and were taken to ECU North for treatment.

The suspect was ejected from the pickup and taken to a trauma unit.

Hall said both patrol vehicles are expected to be declared total losses.

He said the sheriff’s office has received information that some civilian vehicles were damaged and those reports are being referred to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, whose collision reconstruction team is investigating the crash associated with the pursuit.

“This individual placed many people’s lives at risk and it is unfortunate that the accident caused injuries to deputies and the suspect,” Hall said.
