Halifax County Emergency Management said the leak of waste potato material in the Weldon area Wednesday was not considered a hazardous waste spill.

Halifax County government said in a statement the leak occurred around 5:30 a.m. when a GFL truck was transporting potato material from Reser’s Fine Food.

The leak resulted in waste spilling along Highway 125 as well as Trueblood Road and Elm and Green streets in Weldon.

Halifax County Emergency Management Coordinator Buddy Wrenn spoke with the facility manager of GFL.

Although the material had a strong odor, it was not hazardous.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation spread sand on the affected areas twice due to rain, both to dry up the waste and prevent slick driving conditions.
