District court Judge Turner Stephenson Tuesday administered the oaths of office to Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees members Valencia Davis, Michael Salanik, and Henry Ford.

The three were re-elected during last month’s municipal elections.

The board re-elected Mike Williams as chairman and Davis as vice-chair.

There was one public comment from Phil Hux, of the president of the Roanoke Rapids High School Alumni & Friends Association, who announced that the organization was selling blinds to place in the RRHS Senior building. The purchase comes with a commemorative plaque to be placed with the window covering and can be purchased for $250 by contacting the Alumni Association or Phil Hux.

The trustees recognized the Chaloner Lego Robotics teams — the Brickhe@ds and the Lords of Lego.

These teams, coached by Jenny Shives, Mary Campbell, and Kay Allen are in their second year of competition in the First Lego League. “They have been working hard this year on their innovation projects and robotic coding, which they presented at their Robotics competition in November,” the district said.

The Lords of Lego focused their innovation project on Lakeland Cultural Arts Center, and Brickhe@ds focused their innovation project on raising funds and awareness for a new skatepark at Emry Park.

Superintendent Julie Thompson was also recognized for successfully completing her doctorate of education in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership with a concentration in K-12 Educational Administration at The College of William and Mary.

Her dissertation was on A Program Evaluation of the Implementation of i-Ready Reading in a North Carolina Middle School.

In other board news, Williams presented a new committee structure for the board, which will be implemented in January.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, January 16.
