The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, in a news release, provides some tips to make the events safe.
Sheriff Jeff Frazier said deputies will be patrolling in residential neighborhoods.
The tips are:
Access the web before going out for locations of registered sex offenders.
Be present with your children the entire time you are out and avoid one child getting ahead of the other. Children get excited and naturally separate.
Pick out costumes that don't obstruct vision or hearing, which may limit their ability to see or hear traffic or people.
Avoid costumes or props that have edges that can accidentally hit someone else.
Adhere to designated hours for trick or treating that have been set by local governments.
Avoid houses that are without adequate lighting.
Scan every piece of food that is received.
Make sure that children have eaten dinner before going out to avoid the temptation of eating candy before scanning can occur.
Discuss crossing streets before you leave as well as while walking.
If a designated person is taking children out, make sure that safety tips are discussed with them in front of children.
Call 911 for any emergency that arises.
