The demolition is permitted for 60 days, but the project should take less time, Main Street Development Director Christina Caudle said today.
The city has learned it will be able to save the front facade of the building, which was something Main Street hoped could be done. “It maintains the historical credits and preservation of the block,” Caudle said.
It will also create an open walkway leading to the public parking spaces behind the building near city hall.
Main Street is currently working on a master plan for the space to open it up for seasonal activities such as outdoor dining and small concerts.
The address is home to the former Roanoke Restaurant and, according to tax records, the building was constructed in 1916.
The building, however, has been left in a state disrepair and in an unsafe condition.
