A Roanoke Rapids man was jailed Saturday after he not only allegedly assaulted his stepfather but a Roanoke Rapids police officer as well.

Yellorday

Police said the assault occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. as officers began receiving several complaints on Donald Lee Yellorday, 36.

Each time officers responded they could not locate Yellorday until the next call where they found him allegedly assaulting his stepfather in the 1000 block of Cedar Street.

Officers Mark Peck, Jonathan Benthall and Jason Williams responded. As Benthall approached, Yellorday allegedly struck Benthall. Benthall received bruises and scratches in the fray and was treated and released from the hospital.

Three officers got Yellorday into custody, taking him first to the hospital where he was treated and released for injuries sustained when he apparently broke a window during one of several tirades.

He was charged for the alleged assault on Benthall — assault on a government official, communicating threats and resist, delay and obstruct. He was charged with assault on his stepfather and served a warrant from the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. The stepfather was not seriously injured.

Lieutenant O.L. Morgan said it was unclear what the charge from Halifax was for.

Yellorday was jailed on $135,000 bond and has an August 7 court date.

Morgan said it was unclear what Yellorday did to prompt the initial calls other than causing several disturbances throughout that time frame.
