For the third installment of the Texas Gives Back campaign, the Roanoke Rapids restaurant is going to school.

The restaurant is planning a yard sale August 10 from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. in its side parking lot to raise money for school supplies for students starting the elementary level in the Roanoke Rapids system.

Employees are gathering items for the sale and Texas Steakhouse and Saloon General Manager Melissa Hand says the public is welcome to bring their items to sell or make a donation to help buy the supplies.

“We knew we wanted to do something,” Hand said this week.

The suggestion was made to have a yard sale with the theme of Setting Kids Up for Success.

There has already been some early response with a donation of items from Greenville.

Many of the items employees have donated are like new, said Hand. “They donated pictures, mirrors, stuff with the price tags still on it. The employees thought it was a great idea to help setting up kids for success.”

The list for Belmont and Manning alone is exhaustive — from tissues and hand sanitizers to the more common school items such as pencils, rest mats, crayons and pocket folders.

“We know every school is in need of supplies,” Hand said. “What is most important is that when they go to school we want them to be prepared.”

Yard sale item donations from the public should be gently used, such as clothes and toys.

The goal is $1,500, which Hand said will be a good quantity of items and should help between 35 to 40 children. “If we get help from other people in the community it could be more than that. We’re excited about kids going back to school and want to make sure they’re as successful as can be.”

The items will be hand-delivered to the Belmont and Manning and Hand is hopeful businesses and individuals would be willing to donate backpacks to stock the items in.
