Dr. Wegener earned his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School in Newark, New Jersey, and completed his residency at Western Reserve Care System in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

After completing his surgical training in the Midwest, he practiced in Chicago for 10 years and Oxford for 14 years prior to coming to Halifax Regional.

Dr. Wegener has extensive knowledge in performing a wide range of general surgery procedures including intestinal, breast, thyroid, gallbladder and hernia surgery as well as cancer surgery.  

He also focuses on colon cancer screening and is fellowship trained in advanced laparoscopy and endoscopy.

His background has led him to also practice medicine for the United States Army Reserve and he is a retired lieutenant colonel.

When not performing surgery, he enjoys snow skiing and playing golf.

Dr. Wegener will be working alongside Dr. James Ketoff to provide surgical care to the Roanoke Valley.
