A Tuesday night traffic stop led to a search of a hotel room and the arrest of a Florida man on heroin charges.

Captain A.M. Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office narcotics division said in a statement released late Wednesday night a search warrant served at the man’s hotel room resulted in the seizure of 11 bindles of heroin, crack and drug paraphernalia.

The investigation which led to the heroin confiscation began when Agent D.W. McKeel was following up on a drug case. That followup led him to the area of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway near Premier Boulevard shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday.

McKeel conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a motor vehicle violation. The vehicle was stopped in the parking lot of Tractor Supply.

McKeel identified the driver and passenger of the vehicle and requested the assistance of Corporal Brandon Council and his canine partner Bosco.

When asked to step out of the vehicle, the passenger, identified as Daryl Hyde Thomas, 61, of Naples, Florida, put a substance in his mouth and refused to spit it out.

McKeel seized three wet bindles of heroin and an unknown amount was swallowed. During the search of the vehicle a handgun was seized.

Thomas was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, felony possession of heroin and resisting a public officer. Roanoke Rapids officers A. Salmon and J. Shelburne assisted.

McKeel applied for and was granted a search warrant for the hotel room registered to Thomas.  During the search of the room agents seized the heroin and other items.

Thomas was charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin, felony possession of heroin, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Thomas received a September 19 court date.

Agent D.R. Radford and Council assisted with the search.
