A house built in 1835 was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning, according to Gaston Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze around 2:30 a.m. and found the house on Highway 46 just outside the Gaston town limits engulfed on its west side, Chief Ed Porter Jr. said in a statement.

No occupants were home.

Firefighters contained the fire within 10 minutes. Due to the construction of the antiquated structure, firefighters remained on scene for more than six hours performing overhaul operations.

The probable cause of the fire is undetermined at this time but is not considered suspicious. Approximately 20 firefighters from Gaston Fire and Rescue and Garysburg Volunteer Fire Department responded.

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Gaston Police Department, and Northampton County EMS also responded.
