Board of Elections Director Kristin Scott confirmed today Ophelia Gould-Faison’s petition was certified and she will be a write-in candidate against John Whichard, a Republican who filed early in the process, and incumbents Vernon Bryant, Rives Manning and Patrick Qualls. The three incumbents won in the May primary.
While Gould-Faison is considered an official candidate, because she petitioned to be on the ballot as a write-in, her name will not appear on the ballot, Scott said. There will be a write-in spot on the ballot in the board of commissioners race for people who want to vote for her to write her name in.
Gould-Faison had to obtain signatures from 100 registered voters in the county to be considered a write-in candidate.
Out of 313 signatures obtained, the board of elections validated 287, Scott said.
Gould-Faison said this afternoon she plans to release a statement on her candidacy later this week.
Whichard filed to run in February.
