The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Chief Deputy Scott Hall:

 

A Halifax County Superior Court judge today ruled Gene Arnold “Root Root” Hawkins Jr. is eligible for pretrial release after documents filed in court show he is competent to stand trial in the 2006 murder of Roanoke Rapids businessman Shelby Salmon.

With the results of the May 8 primary certified today, the Halifax County Board of Elections will begin Monday researching signatures on a petition submitted by Jimmie Silver to run for sheriff as an independent in the November 6 general election.

The attorney representing a man charged in the shooting deaths of his grandmother and a Hollister man filed a motion in Halifax County District Court seeking a mental evaluation for his client.

Two men were charged and warrants were obtained on another for their alleged involvement in a vehicle larceny.

With the closing of Scotland Neck’s Our Community Hospital last December, there will be no levy from a special taxing district which helped fund the medical facility since the 1960s in the county’s upcoming fiscal year budget.
