Opal Dean (Dee) Gorman left her pain and suffering behind on Thursday, August 15, 2019, after a long and valiant struggle with cancer.

Dee was born in Halifax, NC, to Callie Mae and Sterling Warren.

She is survived by her son, Robert Gorman and his wife Tara Wright and their children Ellen, Jake and Julia.

Dee was the youngest sibling in her family and leaves behind sisters Faye Sanderford (Bill-dec.), Betty Mae Carlisle  (Curtis), and brother Dan Warren (Marie). She is reunited with her deceased brothers Grover Warren (Patricia-dec.), Tommy Warren (Phyllis-dec.), Billy Warren (Sandra), and Zachary Taylor.

Dee grew up on a working farm and picked her fair share of cotton and tobacco, forming a work ethic that served her throughout her life.

One thing’s for certain — two for sure — she was tireless in her willingness to serve,  always putting the needs of others ahead of her own, even as her health declined.

As a young woman, Dee served in the Army receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1968.

She was never intimidated by “Man’s work,” driving a big rig,  started R&A Oil Company with her former husband, Al Gorman, paved the way for her son Robert’s career in the television and film industry as a child actor, while making certain that he got a quality education and enjoyed his childhood.

Later, Dee worked and traveled the country in various technical positions as a Radiographic Engineer.

Dee retired in 2013, settling in Charleston, SC, to be near her son Robert and his family.

Her happiest moments were with her grandchildren cooking special meals, traveling with them on family vacations, caring for them when they were sick or needed transportation to their many activities.

When her youngest grandchild Julia was born, Dee was overjoyed that she was able to be closely involved in her formative years,  creating a lasting bond of love and caring, the kind only a grandma can provide.

In living she demonstrated strength in the midst of her prolonged personal struggle, fighting as hard as anyone could to enjoy her time with family.

In dying, she was quiet, embracing the mercy of our Lord.  Her legacy will be alive in all who were loved by this courageous woman.

The family wishes to thank all the loving caregivers who supported her desires to the end as well as the many friends who have offered support in countless ways.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in her family home in North Carolina.
