Attorney Jamal Summey announced that he will run for the District 6 judge seat currently held by W. Turner Stephenson II.

The seat will be open during the 2025-2028 election cycle, Summey said in a statement. “The Honorable Judge W. Turner Stephenson, II, has informed me that he will not run for re-election due to retiring at the end of this term.”

In the statement Summey said, “Growing up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina the sixth born of seven children, I always knew I wanted to be a servant of the people.”

After graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, “I went on to North Carolina Central University School of Law, where I obtained my Juris Doctorate degree and began my career in this noble profession.”

After graduating he began his tutelage under David H. Beard Jr. as an assistant district attorney prosecuting superior and district court criminal cases in Northampton, Hertford, and Bertie counties.  “While working under Mr. Beard, he afforded me the first-hand opportunity to learn what grit, determination, and hard work would foster. Twenty-six years ago, I was thrust into prosecuting superior court criminal cases within six months of beginning my career. After leaving the district attorney’s office, I joined a partnership with Sammy Webb to form the law firm of Webb, Webb & Summey, P.A., where I have been for the last 21 years of my career.

“I have tried a plethora of jury trials to verdict, which have allowed me to become well-versed on the nuances of law. I have proudly prosecuted and defended the citizens in my community for the last 26 years, since I made eastern North Carolina my home.”

Summey said, “My entire professional career has been dedicated to serving the citizens in Hertford, Northampton, Bertie and Halifax counties. If given the privilege to serve as your next district court judge, I will promote fairness, firmness, and efficiency. If allowed the honor to serve, I promise to be accessible and accountable to the people.”
