A Roanoke Rapids woman died in a Saturday night collision on Highway 48, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

A preliminary report by Trooper J.T. Wilkins says that Delores Holloway Christenbury, who succumbed to her injuries, was the front seat passenger in a Ford Explorer which was struck head-on shortly before 8:30 p.m.

First Sergeant M.D. Williams said the fatal collision occurred as Jamaryon Dyon Martin Atkins was driving an Impala north on Highway 48 and went left of center to pass a Lexus. The Impala sideswiped the Lexus and then hit the Explorer head-on.

Atkins is currently in critical condition and a passenger riding with Atkins — Briana Debrow — sustained a minor injury.

The preliminary report by Wilkins says the driver of the Explorer, James Hubert Christenbury, is in fair condition while passengers Garrett Nicholas Brown, Zoe Allyson Brown, and Nicole Ogburn Christenbury sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Lexus was not injured.

The report by Wilkins said the Impala had an engine fire that was put out quickly.

This collision is still under investigation and alcohol or drug use has not been determined as a factor at this time. No charges have been filed at this time.
