Roanoke Rapids Graded School District high school counselors Jessica Elias, Sabrina Hunter, and Angela Rowe have received a $1,000 grant through MyFuture NC to support the FAFSA Pilot Incentive.

This pilot program will increase access to post secondary education for all students.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form completed by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for financial aid, including grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and federal student loans.

The information provided on the FAFSA is used by the U.S. Department of Education to calculate the student's Expected Family Contribution, which helps colleges and universities determine the amount of financial aid the student may receive.

It's typically filled out annually and is a crucial step in the financial aid process for students pursuing higher education.

This year, in order to help students with this process, the high school counselors have held FAFSA parent nights in order to provide more direct assistance to students and parents in filling out the form.

Counselors have also met with students and families in individual and group sessions.

Science night

Belmont Elementary School will host a Duke Energy Science Night at 6 p.m. Thursday in the school’s multipurpose room.

This is an official event of the 2024 North Carolina Science Festival.

Duke Energy Science Nights feature hands-on activities designed to help children and their families explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This event is for Belmont Elementary students, their families, and the surrounding community.

Belmont Elementary is one of 180 North Carolina elementary schools hosting Duke Energy Science Nights in April 2024.

Funding from the Duke Energy Foundation allows the festival to provide each school with the support and materials needed for the activities.

The Duke Energy Foundation seeks to power vibrant communities through investments in high-performing, sustainable initiatives that emphasize STEM, including programs that help create greater access to and participation in STEM-related informal and out-of-school educational opportunities.

Duke Energy Science Nights are an educational initiative of the North Carolina Science Festival, with statewide science programming for all ages.

The NC Science Festival is a month-long celebration of science that occurs every April. Festival events include hands-on activities, science talks, lab tours, nature experiences, exhibits, performances and other events, all hosted by many different organizations within North Carolina.

The North Carolina Science Festival is produced by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.  For more information about the Festival, visit www.ncsciencefestival.org
