As the summer winds down, so does the annual Betty Ballard Summer Basketball League.

The summer showcase, which showcases boys’ and girls’ games, serves as a way for local teams to get their repetitions during the off-season.

Tuesday’s action featured five games:

Game One

Bertie County Lady Falcons vs. KIPP Pride Lady Panthers

In the first matchup of the evening, the Lady Falcons cruised to a relatively easy victory over the Lady Panthers, 28-12.

Game Two

KIPP Pride Panthers vs. Bertie County Falcons (Boys)

The Panthers lost 36-34 to the Falcons in the second game. In front of an electric KIPP crowd, the Panthers had an opportunity to tie or win the game on the final possession, but a turnover on a drive to the basket sealed the Panthers’ fate.

Game Three

Northampton County Lady Jaguars vs. Northwest Halifax Lady Vikings

Jumping on an opponent and staying aggressive is important to winning games. The Jaguars took an early lead against the Vikings and never relinquished control. Good passing and a rebounding advantage helped the Jags cruise to a 34-20 win.

Game Four

Northampton County Jaguars vs. Northwest Halifax Vikings (Boys)

The Jaguars were able to hold on to victory, 51-50, by staving off a 18-8 run at the end of the game.

With about seven minutes remaining in the second half, the Jaguars took an 11-point lead, 43-32.

Two minutes later, the Vikings would mount a comeback.

Defensive pressure and costly turnovers by the Jags would lead to a 18-8 run the last five minutes and 30 seconds of the game.

A wild sequence for both teams left the Jags with the ball with 25 seconds remaining.

The Jags were able to capitalize at the free-throw line to take a 51-48 lead.

On the ensuing Northwest possession, with time running out, the Vikings drove to the basket for a layup.

The drive to the basket was very questionable down three points.

Northampton inbounded the ball with two seconds left and escaped with the victory.

Game Five

Weldon Lady Chargers vs. Southeast Halifax Lady Trojans

Weldon won the final game of the evening in comeback fashion, 34-27.

The Chargers were down majority of the game, but took the lead when it mattered most.

Late in the game, Weldon was able to connect on two threes to tie the game. On the next possession, the Chargers would score the go ahead basket.

Defensive pressure stymied the Trojans, and the Chargers were able to walk out of the gym victorious.

Summer league play concludes Thursday at 2 p.m. at Gaston Middle School.
