A Roanoke Rapids man was charged this morning with indecent liberties with a child and attempted first-degree rape, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

The charges against Russell William Hathaway Jr., 35, stem from an early morning complaint initially investigated by Sergeant D.R. Bozard, Detective Willie Murphy Jr. said in a statement.

Bozard developed Hathaway, who is familiar with the juvenile victim and the victim's family, as the alleged suspect and further investigation by Murphy determined the man allegedly committed sexual acts against a minor child.

Hathaway, who was arrested at his residence without trouble, was jailed on $100,000 secured bond and awaits an October 21 court date.
