This past Saturday morning, the Roanoke Cinema in Roanoke Rapids hosted 350 supporters of Northampton County native Anna Jones and provided a free special screening of her documentary of her father “Chairman Jones: A Portrait of My Father”.

Anna Jones the daughter of Chairman Jones has spent several years putting together a documentary of her father. An Improbable Leader Chairman Jones tells the story of the director’s father, James Henry Jones, a self-educated farmer, who disregards racism and lack of education to lead the fight to end nearly a century of education inequality in rural Northampton County, NC during the 1950s & 60s.

Jones leadership as North Carolina’s First Black School Board Chairman introduces a new era in education and has a marked effect on racial progress in the state. Born on a former slave plantation in 1916, Jones died in 1984, the year that the Northampton County school system received accreditation for the first time in its history, largely due to his extraordinary vision and leadership.

The story unfolds through his daughter’s conversations with those who lived during that time and witnessed his extraordinary courage and leadership.

Anna Jones can be contacted at: Anna Jones, Producer Chairman Jones Documentary 5119 Copper Ridge Drive, #206 Durham, North Carolina 27707
