Hall declined comment on whether Jameel Martez Pittman, 23, of Rocky Mount, had just made a pick-up in the town when he was spotted committing a traffic violation in a Dodge Challenger by Deputy Steven Casey.

There is no indication in court records of Pittman having any pending charges other than those related to this morning's chase and no record of him on the state Department of Corrections website.

When Casey attempted to stop Pittman, he continued traveling and headed out to the county for approximately 10 to 12 miles into the remote Ventosa area, where he collided with a wooden pole at a farm path while attempting to maneuver around a gate.

Pittman exited the vehicle and fled, Casey and Scotland Neck Police Department Officer Austin Holland securing the vehicle and discovering 14 bricks of heroin on the ground.

Pittman's license was on the vehicle's console.

Hall said it is believed Pittman got a ride into Rocky Mount where he was arrested around 3 a.m. by the city's police department.

Hall said depending on the going price and market, the heroin seized has a street value between $7,000 to $14,000.

Pittman was charged with trafficking heroin; possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin; maintain a vehicle to store narcotics; felony flee to elude arrest and resisting arrest.

Rocky Mount police returned Pittman to Halifax County where he was jailed on $200,000 secured bond and awaits a December 2 court date.
