Heroin trafficking, other charges lodged after I-95 crash

A Connecticut man was jailed on $103,000 bond Thursday after he was charged with impaired driving on Interstate 95 and a large quantity of drugs was found in his vehicle.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty said Austin Lee Rice, 28, of Hartford, was heading to Florida when he tried to make an abrupt turn from the right lane of the interstate around 10:30 a.m. and caused a collision at the southbound 172 mile marker.

Master Officer Gerald Morris and Officer Joey Spragins responded.

Hasty said in a statement Morris determined Rice was impaired and after a search warrant was granted during the investigation discovered narcotics in his vehicle.

Officers found 89 bindles of heroin; 33 grams of marijuana; 20 dosage units of Xanax; .23 grams of meth and various items of drug paraphernalia.

In addition to the drive while impaired charge, Morris charged Rice with careless and reckless driving; trafficking heroin; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver heroin; possession of heroin; possession of methamphetamine; possession with intent to manufacture, sell of deliver marijuana; possession of marijuana; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver schedule IV; possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance.

Rice has a December 30 court date.
