A Thursday traffic stop in the Gumberry-Garysburg area resulted in the seizure of 150 grams of marijuana and the arrest of a Conway man.

Lieutenant A.J. Thomas of the Northampton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Deputy M. Sledge was patrolling the area when he observed a Nissan Altima driven erratically on Highway 186 near Cornwallis Road. He stopped the vehicle on Highway 301 and School Street in Garysburg and learned the vehicle was operated by Don Long II.

Sledge noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and initially arrested Long after a user amount of marijuana was found in his possession.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded 150 grams of marijuana; $1,000 in cash and a firearm.

A magistrate found probable cause to charge Long with maintaining a vehicle to store a controlled substance; possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; possession of a firearm by a felon and a citation for driving left of center.

Long has a November 19 court date.

Sheriff Jack Smith in the statement commended Sledge “for his diligence and hard work that he provides for the citizens of Northampton County. Deputy Sledge is an asset to this office.”

Smith also acknowledged the assistance of the Garysburg Police Department.
