Methamphetamine charges were lodged against an Elm City woman and Battleboro man early this morning in Enfield.

Major Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said it was not clear why Bobbie Joe Binkley, 38, and Elbert Cherry, 41, were in Enfield when Sergeant Eric Johnson stopped them around 2 a.m. on South McDaniel Street. It was also unclear whether the meth was purchased in Enfield or they reportedly had it in their possession when Binkley, the driver of a Ford pickup, was stopped for a registration violation.

Hall said in a statement Johnson arrested Binkley and Cherry after they were reportedly found in possession of 14 grams of meth, hypodermic needles, glass smoking devices and Xanax.

The pair face charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of schedule IV, possession of drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a vehicle to store narcotics.

Binkley has separate charges of no operator’s license and expired registration while Cherry was served with an outstanding order for arrest.

Both were placed in the Halifax County Detention Center, Binkley receiving a $2,500 bond and Cherry a $4,000 as they await February 24 court dates.

Deputy Austin Holland and Enfield police officers assisted.
