Chief Chuck Hasty said the conversion of the vehicle to a mobile command center will be a joint effort between the police, fire and public works department.
Once the work is completed, including painting the vehicle in the department's black and yellow scheme, its use will not just be limited to Roanoke Rapids, but other jurisdictions in the area which need it. “It will be available for everyone in the county.”
The vehicle will be equipped with radios, communication equipment and maps as well as other items for situations such as natural disasters, missing children and manhunts.
Hasty said he was appreciative of the donation. “It saves the taxpayers a lot of money. A brand new vehicle like this would cost $100,000.”
