Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Chuck Hasty said Michael Jaquan Davis was jailed without opportunity for bond and has an April 20 court date.

In addition to the attempted murder count he faces a count of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon; conspiracy; two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle; damage to property and resisting delaying and obstructing an officer.

Hasty said investigation continues and police continue to look for a second person in the case.

The events unfolded shortly after 4:30 this morning when the victim told officers he answered a knock at the door.

One of the alleged suspects claimed they ran into a parked vehicle with their bicycle. When the victim stepped out to look, a second person came from around the corner of the residence with a gun.

The victim and the armed person began to struggle over the weapon. The victim broke free and fired with his own weapon what Hasty said in a statement were defensive shots. As they retreated, the reputed suspects returned fire at the homeowner, who received minor injuries during the scuffle not attributable to gunfire.

Master Officer Roy Ball located the alleged suspects in the 700 block of Carolina Street, where they ran from him.

Ball, Sergeant Daniel Jenkins, officers Scott Blythe and Jamie Hardy took Davis into custody under a carport. They recovered a handgun while taking him into custody.

The second person eluded capture and was described as a young black male wearing jeans, a predominantly red hooded sweatshirt or jacket and dark backpack. He was last seen running towards Ninth Street.
