A tractor-trailer driver was listed in stable condition after his rig turned over on Interstate 95 early this morning.

There was no immediate answer this afternoon at the Roanoke Rapids office of the state Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash.

In a statement, Gaston Fire and Rescue Chief Ed Porter Jr. said units were dispatched around 2:30 this morning and found the rig on its side, blocking the northbound lanes near the 177 mile marker.

The Freightliner was leaking heavy amounts of diesel fuel into median. Firefighters contained the spill by using dikes.

Several vehicles were found in the median after taking precautions to avoid collision with the tractor-trailer.

The driver, whose named was not released, was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center by Northampton EMS and was listed in stable condition.

Traffic was diverted through Garysburg. Northampton Emergency Management and state Department of Transportation stayed on the scene until the interstate was reopened around 10:30 a.m
