Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement the Saturday shooting was reported around 7:45 p.m. when officers responded to a call of a shot being fired inside Family Dollar on East Tenth Street.
The person who reportedly fired the shot already left when officers arrived, Hasty said in the statement.
Store employees told Master Officer J. Benthall the man entered the store with his hands in his pockets.
When he approached the cashier a shot was fired and he fled from the store in an unknown direction. It was not immediately clear whether he had a vehicle.
Hasty confirmed this afternoon the shot was fired while the gun was in his pocket. Whether the man was attempting to rob the store remains under investigation as does the question whether he intentionally fired the weapon or the shot was a misfire.

Sunday shooting

Meanwhile, Hasty reported in a statement, he and Captain E.A. Bryant attempted a traffic stop in the area of East Tenth Street and Park Avenue around 4:30 p.m.
The driver refused to stop for blue lights and siren and continued to the emergency room of Halifax Regional.
Officers learned a person in the vehicle was shot and was carried inside the facility for treatment.
The man was shot outside his residence in the 1400 block of West Tenth Street, Hasty said.
Hasty said motive and other details continue to be investigated.
