Robert Wade Johnston, Sr. 63, of 122 Madison Street died Friday, May 24, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Johnston was born October 29, 1949 in Halifax County to the late James Russell Johnston and Nellie Belle Reese Johnston.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers: Freddie Johnston, Willie Johnston, George Johnston and Wayne Johnston; his sister: Judy Johnston.

Mr. Johnston loved his children, grandchildren and fishing.  He was very outgoing and loved to tell jokes.  He loved to have a good time, never met a stranger and would give you the shirt off his back.  No task was too big or too small for him to handle. He was very proud of all his children.

He is survived by his wife Joyce Bailey Johnston of Roanoke Rapids; his sons: Robert Wade Johnston, Jr. and his wife Jessica Danielle Johnston and Steven Wayne Johnston and his wife Crystal Johnston both of Roanoke Rapids; his daughters: Ruby Esquivel and her husband Adrian, Elizabeth Anne Mayton and her husband Richard both of Roanoke Rapids, Nelly Deann Meador of Indiana and Tammy Johnston and Brent Dial of Roanoke Rapids; his brothers: Edgar Johnston, Joe Johnston, W.G. Johnston, Wesley Johnston, Lee Johnston, Michael Johnston and Eddie Johnston all of Roanoke Rapids; his sisters: Mary Wynn, Ella Lassiter of Roanoke Rapids, Ann Murphy of Roanoke Rapids and Marie Bailey; his grandchildren: Dylan Johnston, Julian Johnston, Taylor Dickens, Alea Hooker, Victoria Johnston, Johnathan Johnston, Elizabeth Stewart, Roger Stewart, III, Richard Mayton, III, Eric Mayton, Damian Wright, Alex Wright, Chloe Meador, Brayden Meador, Grayson Meador and Sadie Dial; his great grandchildren: Richard Mayton, IV, Katlyn Mayton, Jayden Mayton, Noah Mayton; several nieces and nephews to whom he was their special Grandpa and Uncle.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. Roy Porter officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, May 27, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home and other times at the home.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
