District 2 council battle set

There will be a contested race for the District 2 Roanoke Rapids City Council seat Greg Lawson is vacating while in Weldon former mayor Johnny Draper will run against incumbent Julia Meacham for the town's top political office.

Filing for the November 5 municipal elections closed today and in Roanoke Rapids voters will choose between Wayne Smith or Gerald McDaniel in District 2.

Smith intended to run back in 2011 but decided to withdraw.

Mayor Emery Doughtie and Councilwoman Suetta Scarbrough will run unopposed.

In the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District race, incumbents Jay Carlisle, Patrick Qualls and Thomas McDonald will face opposition from challengers Dorothy Green, a former board member, Ann Moore and Cathy Hux Keeter.

Besides the contested mayor's race in Weldon, the three sitting town board members — Stanley Edwards, Susie Adams and Kimberly Ann Robinson — will face challengers Chris Dwight and Nancy H. Sandoval.
