A Gasburg man has been charged with allegedly using social media to extort the victim into dismissing a domestic violence protection order.

Halifax County Sheriff's Office Detective J.M. Clark declined to go into specifics of the case against James Marvin Williams Jr., 39, particularly on the relationship between Williams and the victim and the specific social media outlet used.

In a statement, the detective said he began an investigation in August that determined Williams allegedly pressured the victim to dismiss the protective order.

The investigation led to warrants being obtained on the Virginia man for extortion, felony stalking, cyberstalking and two counts of violating a domestic violence protective order.

Williams was taken into custody today by Clark and Sergeant S. Rodwell and Deputy W.A. Smith.

Williams was jailed and is awaiting a bond hearing before a district court judge because this is a domestic violence case.

He has an October 2 court date.
