Halifax County Crimestoppers is looking to take a flight out of a crime with foursomes ready to tee off for its first golf tournament fundraising event.

The event, which seeks to raise funds for its crime rewards, is set for October 26 at Scotfield Country Club, said Frankie Griffin, tournament director and administrator of the Crimestoppers program.

The event is one sponsor short of its goal of 18, but the biggest thing now is finding teams of four to participate. “We're looking good on sponsors and now we're working on teams.”

The prize packages for a team just showing up serve as a good incentive and the more teams that enter, the greater the first, second and third-place prize money, he said. “Every golfer that participates gets a $100 gift card for Travis Mathew golf apparel. Texas Steakhouse is sponsoring the lunch. There are gift packs which contain golf goodies and snacks.”

The first place team gets 30 percent of total team entry fees, second place gets 15 percent and third place 5 percent. “If we have a full tournament with 20 teams the winning team gets close to $1,000,” Griffin said.

Griffin said White Motors stepped as the main sponsor. “They gave us $8,000 in gift cards.”

The prizes for the three hole-in-one contests include: Hole 3 — three nights at The Players Club-Sawgrass in Ponte Verde, Florida with two full rounds of golf; Hole 10 — a set of Razor X black irons; Hole 16 — head to toe set of Travis Mathews golf apparel plus a $500 Travis Mathews gift card.

The prize for a hole-in-one on Hole 8 is use of a 2013 Cadillac ATS free for two years.

Scotfield has also been generous, Griffin said. “They have welcomed us with open arms.”

Proceeds from the tournament go to help Crimestoppers maintain its reward fund for successful tips on crimes and seizure of illicitly-gained assets, Griffin said.

Since Griffin took the job as administrator of the program in April, Crimestoppers has paid out $650 in rewards representing three crimes that have occurred in the county. “We've had drugs and weapons seized through tips.”

Maintaining caller anonymity is one of the keys to the success of the program, Griffin said. “It's an anonymous way of (reporting crime). It lets people who don't want to be tattletales or snitches (have a way to report information). It is a way we can solve more crimes.”

People with tips can either call the Crimestoppers phone line at 252-583-4444 or report through the organization's website, where more information on the tournament can be found at this link.

Cost per team is $160 and anyone wanting more information or to help Crimestoppers and Citizens on Patrol members volunteer may call Griffin at 252-326-4924.
