Major Scott Hall said Toby Elijah Rosser's flight from law enforcement was most likely prompted by his failure to have a current license and insurance as well as an open container of alcohol in the vehicle.
The six-mile chase began on Fishing Creek Road near White Oak Road in the Enfield area around 4:30 p.m. where Deputy T.M. Sewell and Deputy C. Boden, a dog handler, set up a checking station.
Rosser approached the checking station in a Honda vehicle and Boden spoke with him. He accelerated, however, and struck Boden.
Boden and Sewell pursued the vehicle on a chase that ended up on Ward Road in Nash County, where Rosser abandoned the vehicle.
Sewell, Boden and Boden's dog Dusko continued the chase on foot and Rosser surrendered, the dog's presence being a factor, Hall said.
Rosser, 36, of Nash County, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, felony speed to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked, fail to head blue light and siren, speeding, fictitious registration, resist, obstruct and delay, no insurance and possession of an open container of alcohol.
Rosser was placed in the Halifax County Detention center under a $25,000 secured bond with an October 9 court date pending.
