The Halifax County Sheriff's Office has determined that a man found lying on the side of Interstate 95 Tuesday night is a transient who travels up and down the East Coast, but have thus far have not determined his identity.

The latest information on the man determined he has been through the Fuquay-Varina area where officers there encountered him, Major Scott Hall of the sheriff's office said.

There is no information the man has been charged with anything criminally that requires fingerprinting, Hall said.

The sheriff's office has been fielding calls fueled from social media about the man, Hall said, and has been receiving calls and tips from Michigan to Texas. As of yet, there is no missing person report that the sheriff's office has been alerted to fitting the man's description. “We're searching through things. There appeared to be something promising but it hasn't panned out.”

The man was found lying next to Interstate 95 in the southbound lane near the 159 mile marker Tuesday night.

He had no identifying papers or other forms of identification when deputies found him around 7 p.m.

The 159 mile marker is in the Enfield area just south of Robbie's.

The man, who remains in the care of a nearby facility, appears to be OK physically.

He is between 50- to 60-years-old; stands 6-feet tall and weighs about 170 pounds.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-583-8201 or 252-583-1991.
