RRHS DECA Chapter hosts Dunkin’ Donuts DECA Dash 5K Fun-Run/Walk

Can you run half of a 5K, down a dozen donuts, and then run the remaining portion of the race? What about just a few donut holes? The Roanoke Rapids High School DECA chapter is planning a challenging day of running or walking on Saturday November 23 to benefit Duke Children’s Hospital and The National Bone Marrow Registry

The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Roanoke River Park on Oakwood Avenue in Roanoke Rapids with the “Dunkin’ Donuts DECA Dash”. Each participant will run or walk 1.5 miles to the Roanoke Canal Museum along the Roanoke Canal Trail, eat their choice of nothing at all, 6 donut holes, or the big challenge – a dozen donuts, and run/walk back to the park to complete the 3.1 mile event.

We’re hoping people will sign up for this fun event and enjoy the day. We’ve been planning this event for the past few months as part of our marketing and public relations classwork” said Carson Arthur, Roanoke Rapids High School DECA president.

Students selected the two charities as a way to honor classmate Carson Arthur who had Leukemia as a child. His sister donated bone marrow to him in 2003 and as a result he has been cancer free for almost 11 years.

Both Duke Children’s Hospital and The National Bone Marrow Registry are great organizations that have helped my family tremendously,” Arthur added.

Registration forms for the event are available at all Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools, TJ Davis Recreation Center, Key Fitness, Calvary Baptist Church, as well as from any DECA member.

The students have worked diligently to organize this event and to solicit local sponsors. I’m really proud of all of their hard work! We’re hoping now for great participation from the community,” said Jan Tugwell, Roanoke Rapids High School Marketing/DECA teacher.
