Copper theft has been on the rise in Halifax County over the last three months, the sheriff's office reports.

The thefts are occurring at both occupied and vacant houses and include one church in Enfield, Sheriff Wes Tripp said.

The thieves are targeting home heating and air conditioning units, stealing them for the copper wiring.

The sheriff's office is encouraging neighborhoods to stay alert. “Help neighbors by monitoring their property while away,” he said.

Tripp said pay attention to vehicles that appear to be work trucks or vans without company logos. “These type of vehicles pass as legitimate work vehicles when in fact they could be suspects stealing valuables from your neighbors.”

Report anything that doesn't look right on HVAC units or if there is loose wiring. “This small tidbit could help not only you and your neighbor, but your local law enforcement agencies in fighting these crimes.”

Anyone with information regarding these type of larcenies is encouraged to contact the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office or Halifax County Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
