Tyree Davis, who is a candidate for Halifax County Sheriff, has been appointed by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to the North Carolina Safer Schools Task Force.

The task force is comprised of 20 individuals throughout the state to provide guidance to the Center for Safer Schools and consider future policy and legislative action that is needed to improve school safety in North Carolina.

The task force will also advise the Center for Safer Schools and Governor McCrory on how to train law enforcement, school staff and students on the use of panic alarm systems, bullying, increased security, physical modifications, safety assessment and reporting systems, and student addictions so that students, staff and law enforcement will know how to respond and act as needed.

The task force will focus on a four step systematic framework for safer schools.

A letter from Governor McCrory to Davis stated, “North Carolina is moving forward. Your service will make an immediate and positive impact upon the changes we are making in our state. We need leaders such as you in public service to help promote our vision and realization for a better North Carolina. School safety is a top priority of my administration.

“One of my first actions after taking office was tasking the Department of Public Safety with developing a comprehensive plan to make our schools safer for students, parents, teachers and administrators. I am pleased to announce a very diverse, talented and functional task force that will provide guidance and sound advice that is needed to improve school safety in North Carolina.”

Davis said in a statement the announcement was welcomed after much attention was recently brought to bullying and school violence, not only across the state but also across the country. “I look forward to working with the task force and Governor Pat McCrory to help make our schools across the state safer. “In 2010 I was recognized by North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper as an elite law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina, and now being appointed by Governor Pat McCrory, I am honored, yet humbled to have been selected as one of the twenty from such an elite group.”

Said Davis: “There are not many people that can say they have been recognized by both the Attorney General and the Governor of North Carolina for their law enforcement experience, training and education. I can, and I’m vey honored and proud to be able to say that.” Davis said following a December meeting he will meet with the school superintendents, principals, area interim sheriffs, city police chiefs, and school resource officers in an effort to make schools safer. “This is a state appointment, but I will share all resources to make our schools and students here in Halifax and neighboring counties safer. I want the schools here in Halifax County to be the benchmark for other schools to follow, not only throughout the state of North Carolina but also throughout the country.”

Davis is a Halifax County native who was reared in Weldon and attended Weldon City and Halifax County school systems.

He now resides in Enfield with his wife Arnette and son Jaden, where he owns a transportation company.

Davis was a narcotics investigator and detective sergeant in investigations for the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The length of Davis’s term is two years.
