Scotland Neck native Donald Shields will wear his striped shirt on the football field of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill this Saturday. Not as a College referee, but a member of the refereeing crew as a North Carolina High School Athletic Association football referee in the 2A State Championship between Southwest Onslow and Shelby High.
Shields is a sixteen year veteran of NCHSAA as a referee and this will be his second NCHSAA State Championship. Back in 2006 Shield refereed the 2AA State Championship at Wake Forest University between Southern Vance and Shelby.
Shields also was a member of the refereeing crew for the 2010 East-West All-Star game in Greensboro.
Shields stated “ I enjoy the game and watching kids grow up and improve on the field.” “It is an honor to be considered and selected to officiate this caliber of game, meaning the NCHSAA State Championship,” he added.
