An investigation by the U.S. Postal Service has been launched after an off-duty Roanoke Rapids police officer reportedly detected the odor of marijuana inside the city post office Tuesday afternoon.

The subsequent investigation by local authorities led to the discovery of two packages, each believed to contain two pounds of marijuana destined for an undisclosed location in Roanoke Rapids, city police Detective Bobby Martin said.

The packages, mailed from Arizona and Iowa, were not opened, but based on officer expertise and the positive indication by Roanoke Rapids police dog Dozier and his handler Gerald Morris, Roanoke Rapids police notified postal inspectors, Martin said.

Value of the suspected marijuana is around $6,000.
