Meagan Colston and Elena Miller of Roanoke Rapids have been awarded the Girl Scout Silver Award by North Carolina Coastal Pines, which is the second highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

The award symbolizes Girl Scout Cadette’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and their community as they discover their strengths and take action to make the world a better place.

For their Girl Scout Silver Award project, Hanna’s Place Beautification, the girls partnered with Hannah’s Place shelter to make improvements to the center and help create a warm and inviting atmosphere for shelter clients.

The girls built a handmade bench and provided canvas hangings to decorate the shelter.

Both girls have been Girl Scouts since 2004 and are members of Girl Scout Troop 1499 led by Deborah Miller and Tammie Colston.

Miller is in the 8th grade and is the daughter of Dr. Isaac Miller III and Deborah H. Miller. In addition to Girl Scouting, she is active in dance, swim team, soccer, softball, basketball, piano and choir. She is a member of the Gaston College Preparatory Debate Team, Junior BETA Club, and Environmental Club.

Colston is in the 8th grade and is the daughter of Mike and Tammy Colston. In addition to Girl Scouting, she participates in art club, softball, cheer, swim team, and is a member of Junior Beta Club.

The Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout in the sixth through eighth grades can earn.

The Silver Award recognizes the work of Girl Scout Cadettes who demonstrate leadership skills culminating in 50 hours or more dedicated toward a service project that makes a difference in their community.

The service project can be completed as an individual or with a group.

If accomplished as a group, each girl is responsible for a specific part of the project and is required to evaluate her contribution to the project and to the group.
