Warrant filed in Madison Street shooting

An alleged suspect has been identified and warrants are on file in a shooting that occurred in the 300 block of Madison Street Friday night.

Roanoke Rapids police Detective Jeff Davis said the victim was standing outside speaking with other people around 10 p.m. when a man came up behind him and fired multiple shots. The victim was struck twice, once in the arm and again in the back as he ran away. The victim made it to Fifth and Jackson streets where he called 911.

The victim is in fair condition.

Davis said the victim was shot with a handgun of undetermined caliber.

The reported suspect, who Davis declined to immediately name as the case remains under investigation, will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Motive in the case has not been established.
