A man wanted for a March attempted armed robbery of a Hollister convenience store was extradited back to Halifax County Tuesday after his arrest in St. Clair County, Illinois earlier this month.

Detective Chris Scott of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said James Anthony Palmer, 40, of Hollister, was arrested by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office on July 14 on a traffic stop.

Palmer reportedly gave law enforcement there false information on his identity. Further investigation led authorities to learn he had been flagged in criminal databases as wanted in Halifax County for the March 2 attempted robbery of a store on Highway 561.

He faced driving charges in Illinois, as well as giving false information to officers.

The North Carolina State Extradition Team brought Palmer back to Halifax County where he faces a count of attempted robbery and two counts of assault by pointing a gun.

He was jailed on $20,000 bond and awaits an August 20 court date.

Scott said it was not clear how long Palmer, who had originally been thought to be in New York, was in Illinois or why he was there.
