As James Pierce prepares to step down from his seat on the Halifax County Board of Commissioners, he says he's not stepping away from community service.

Pierce, who lost his bid for re-election in the May primary, was honored by his colleagues on the board at today's meeting as well as a reception held afterward.

“You've been real good friends,” he said to family, friends and public officials at the catered reception. “Being brought up in a house of 12 children and being the eldest, I had to be the leader sometimes. I had a very loving family and was taught to grow up with the Lord. Without those religious values, you can't be fair.”

In life after public service, he said he will continue to donate his time and energy, helping those less fortunate.

He will also continue to champion the cause of educational rights in Halifax County. “I want to make sure every child has an equal opportunity to get a good education.”

Pierce shares a laugh with Manning.

During a special recognition portion of the meeting, Commissioner Rives Manning presented Pierce with a resolution, honoring the current chairman's tenure on the board that began December 2, 2002. He has been the steady chairman of the board since 2009.

“Mr. Pierce was involved in many decisions affecting the character of the community,” the document said, “Each time exhibiting sound judgment and concern for the education, health, safety welfare and economic development of Halifax County, its citizens and visitors.”

Through his decision-making process, the resolution said, “Mr. Pierce has proven to be a dedicated and effective public servant who has gained the admiration and respect of his fellow commissioners and citizens of Halifax County.”

Commissioner Carolyn Johnson told the board, “I have always felt he was a person of intergrity and a person of courage.”

Pierce thanked the board for the resolution and his many family members for coming. “I'm sure mom and dad are looking down very proud of us. I'm proud of my heritage and proud of my upbringing. I will miss being here, but I will continue to serve in some capacity.”

County Manager Tony Brown said during a break in the meeting, “He's been a great chairman, fair and objective.”

Commission Vernon Bryant, who was at opposite ends of the school merger issue, which Pierce supported, said during the reception, “I've known you a very long time. You've been a very good mentor to me as well. Thank you for making Halifax County a better place.”

Manning, vice chair of the board, told Pierce, “It's been a pleasure serving with you. We didn't always agree, but most times we were not disagreeable.”
