Roanoke Rapids police are encouraging residents to leave porch lights own and secure their vehicles in the wake of approximately 40 break-ins that have occurred over the last month.

Chief Andy Jackson said in mapping the crimes, they have occurred across the city. It is unclear yet whether these crimes, in which mainly unlocked vehicles are being targeted, is the work of one person or group or several different groups.

The plea to keep porch lights on, Jackson said, is, “So police can see better. People use the cover of darkness.”

In making the plea to keep porch lights on and lock vehicles, the police department is also asking residents to remove all valuables. Items taken in the 40 break-ins include electronics, weapons, loose change, pocketbooks and wallets. “We are aware it is hunting season so do not leave firearms in your vehicles. If you see anybody in the area at night that is suspicious call 911.”

Anyone with information on the cases is encouraged to call Detective Bobby Martin at 252-578-8969 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
