After holding benefit concerts to raise awareness and funds for cancer awareness and the AIDS crisis in Africa, Ellen Draper is bringing another to the Roanoke Rapids High School auditorium Saturday night.

It is for the cause of raising awareness for suicide prevention, with funds from the show going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“In our community we don't have a lot of awareness of suicide and depression,” the East Carolina University sophomore and Roanoke Rapids native said Tuesday. “Anyone I've talked to has been affected by depression and suicide in some way. It's important to raise awareness.”

The effort was sparked by the compassion she has for helping people. “I'm hoping someone will start something in our community and make that happen. Music is my passion, but I've always wanted to to do a benefit concert. It's just a huge desire to make a difference.”

The evening of music begins at 7 p.m. Slated to perform are the Children's Community Choir from the Music School of Roanoke Rapids; the Roanoke Rapids High School Chorus; Holly Moore; Corband, a Christian group from Greenville; Hayleigh Stallings; Vinson and Natalie Jones; Harley Briggs, Tessa Herring; Grey Draper and Ellen.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed to support the cause.
