Yellow Jackets on the road at Durham School of the Arts

The JV girls hit the court first and earned the first win of the night beating DSA 21-20.

Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were:  Imani Cole with 8 points, Nyia Pierce with 6 points, Erica Whitmire with 5 points and Camden Bierbauer with 2 points.

Comments from head coach Jim Whitmire, "Our Lady JVs got off to a very slow start.   We settled in after the half and got off to a 9 point lead.   The DSA girls mounted a big comeback and took the lead late in the forth quarter.   Our girls never gave up and retook the lead with about 3 mins to go.   The lead then went back and forth by one point with every basket exchange.   We took the lead again with 5.6 seconds to go.   The girls played solid defense and stopped the Bulldogs when it counted the most.

We are very young and we are consistently getting better.   Warren County is coming up Friday.   They handed us our only loss of the season and we intend to even the score."

The JV boys picked up where the JV girls left off and earned a win as well beating DSA 68-47.

Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were:  James Mallory withj 18 points, Ty Simmons with 14 points, Cameron Rogerson with 11 points, Jack Neville & Deraj Watson with 5 points each, Josh Elias with 4 points, Armotti Harvey with 3 points while Zack Vincent, Dre Terry, Quincy Vann and Jordan Collins each had 2 points.

The Varsity girls tied the game up at 39 all and sent the game into overtime and completed the match-up with a game winning basket by Brooke McClenny with two seconds on the clock. RRHS beat DSA 50-49.

Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were:  Brook McClenny with 19 points, Brianna Allen with 16 points, Alizae Neville with 7 points, Taylor Medlin with 4 points, Brionna Gibson and Alloni Wallace with 2 points each.

The lady Jackets are siting with a 3-9 overall record and a 3-3 conference record. Improving over only 2 wins last season.

Comments from head coach Jim Whitmire, "Our Varsity girls got back to the winning side of the ledger.   We got off to a slow start and still had some "hangover" from the devastating loss at Bunn.   With the loss of Mike Newsome and some injuries, the Bunn game was very difficult.   We pulled together midway through the first quarter and started playing like we are capable of.   We had a comfortable 9 point lead at the half.   We came out in the second half and was bitten by the "turnover bug" again.   Committing some key turnovers and giving up the lead pretty quickly.   But, as we are known to do, we dug in and played very hard.   We ran the offense sets and played solid defense down the stretch.   We found ourselves down by six, with 1:56 to go.   Got the turnovers needed and made the right decisions under intense pressure.   Tied the game and went into overtime 39-39.   DSA jumped out and scored the first six points in the overtime period.   We never lost focus and continued to play our game.   Down by 1 with 3.5 seconds to go.   We had the ball under our goal, ran the inbound play to perfection.   Clean pass, into the paint, to Brooke McClenny and she made the clutch shot while being fouled.

We had a fantastic effort from every player on the roster.   The only things that continue to plague us are free throw percentage (4 for 28) and turnovers.   The biggest thing we have learned, however, is that we stayed very focused and finished a game that we would have given up on a month ago.   This girls are coming together at exactly the right time and we are proving that "team" translates to wins.   We now find ourselves 3-3 in conference play.

We are at Warren County Friday night.   Please come out and support these teams."

The varsity boys finished the night on the court earning Roanoke Rapids the SWEEP beating DSA 63-58.

Leading scorers for Roanoke Rapids were:  Dejuan Walker with 16 points, Marcus Jones with 15 points and Cameron Yarboro with 12 points.

"They took a lead in the second quarter and we turned up our defense in the second half. I am very proud of everyone of these guys and the role each of them played tonight," said head coach Tyler Snyder.
