The Davie Volunteer Fire Department responded to two weather-related fires Monday afternoon within the span of eight minutes.

The first call came in around 1:15 p.m. at Yarrow Lane in the Community Mobile Home Park off Highway 158.

The rented mobile home, owned by Franklin Cook, was declared a total loss after a torpedo heater was used to thaw frozen lines, Davie Chief David Padgett said.

The intense heat of the device ignited combustible material underneath. An attempt extinguish the fire was futile until firefighters from Davie and Rheasville arrived as all outside water sources were frozen, Padgett said.

There were no injuries and the American Red Cross responded to give assistance to the resident, who lost all belongings in the blaze. The occupant has family to stay with, he said.

Padgett said caution is advised in dealing with frozen water lines. “In this weather, we're going to have frozen water lines. The best advice is to call a plumber. Sometimes you have to wait for the weather to warm up.”

No one was injured in the fire.

Meanwhile, eight minutes later, Davie firefighters, with Roanoke Rapids assisting, responded to 2170 Highway 158, about three-quarters of a mile from the mobile home fire.

There firefighters found there was a fire in the wall of the wood-framed house and fire had broken through the chimney flue.

There was no content damage or injury. The fire was contained to the flue area. Padgett said it is important if wood is the primary source of heat to have the chimney inspected and cleaned once a year.
