Weldon teen charged in botched robbery

A Weldon teen was arrested Sunday in an attempted armed robbery in which the victim was shot several times Friday night.

Detective W. Murphy Jr. of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the victim is in stable condition.

He said several others are wanted in the crime, which was described as a botched robbery attempt.

He declined to go into further specifics about the case.

Deputies responded to Holly Court in Weldon around 7 p.m. The victim was transported to a hospital and later airlifted to another medical facility.

Investigation determined robbery was the motive and eventually led to the arrest of Christopher Mykel Brooks, 17.

Brooks was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Three Flags store in the South Weldon area.

He faces charges of possession of a firearm by a felon; conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon; attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Brooks was also wanted for a probation violation in the county for a stolen firearm.

Brooks was jailed on $101,000 bond and is awaiting a March 18 court date. Further arrests are pending.
