Expect more random acts of kindness.

That's how Valley Community Church's Youth Group will follow up with a project where its members handed out free cookies to motorists traveling down Tenth Street in the waning afternoon hours Tuesday.

“We just wanted to show there are good people out there,” said Justin Temple, a member of the group.

It's called service evangelism, said Devin Taylor. “Jesus did this with the 5,000. It's just about serving, just like in his teachings.”

The group baked 240 cookies and by 6:30, about two hours after the project began, the supplies were vanishing.

“We had the idea of an outreach,” said Anthony Harder. “It seemed like a nice idea to spread the love of Jesus in a good way.”

They handed cookies out before the Roanoke Rapids High School softball game and gave some to patrons of a nearby dance studio, Taylor said. “I think it help kids understand what it's really all about.”

While some handed out free cookies to motorists, others held up “Honk if you love Jesus” signs.

Horns of passing cars bellowed along Tenth Street as members of the youth group stood on either side.

“We will probably do it again,” Taylor said.

One of the things the group wants to do is go into nursing homes with gift baskets to express appreciation to the employees for the job they do.

More information can be obtained through the church's ministries page.
