Halifax closes baseball regular season with a win

Halifax Academy Varsity baseball team beats Epiphany 4-3 in final game of the regular season.

On a beautiful afternoon the Varsity Vikings to the field for their final regular season game. On the 2nd pitch of the game Epiphany's lead off batter sends the ball over the left field fence for a home run. The Vikings did not panic and got out of the inning with only 1 hit. Luke Blackman was on 1st from a single when Ryan Hockaday strode to the plate and sent the 1st pitch over left-center field fence for a 2 run homer and giving the Vikings the lead 2-1. Epiphany scored another run in the top of the 2nd inning tying the game. The game would remain tied until the top of the 5th inning when Epiphany's lead off hit a single, stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd when the pick off throw from catcher Ryan Hockaday hit the runner in the arm sending the ball to center field. He would later score giving Epiphany a 3-2 lead. That would be the last run allowed by Viking relief pitcher. Luke struck out 2 batters in the 5th inning and struck out 5 of the final 6 batters to help give the Vikings their victory. DH Zac Edwards led off the bottom of the 5th inning for the Vikings with a single to right field followed by singles by Matthew Wray and Blackman. Pinch runner Eric Hockaday would score on Blackman's hit and Wray followed on a sacrifice fly by Collin Smith. That would end up being the winning run for the Vikings.

Ryan Mizelle got the start on the mound for the Vikings pitching 3 innings & allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, and 4 strike outs. Luke Blackman came in to pitch the final 4 innings facing only 14 batters, allowing only 2 hits, 0 walks, and an impressive 9 strike outs.

Leading batters for the Vikings today were: Ryan Hockaday with 2 run home run, Matthew Wray and Luke Blackman with 2 singles each, Collin Smith & Zac Edwards with a single each.

State playoffs will be determined Sunday and begin next Tuesday, May 5.
