A Gaston man was hospitalized this evening to be treated for burns sustained in a house fire on Gardner Drive.

The severity of the injuries was not immediately known and Gaston Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed Porter Jr. said investigation to determine the cause of the fire is ongoing. A second occupant escaped without injury.

The call came in shortly after 10 p.m. at 302 Gardner Drive.

Gaston and Garysburg firefighters responded to the single-story, cinder block house and observed flames and heavy smoke coming from the right side of the back of the house.

Porter said the fire appeared to start in a back bedroom. Firefighters got the fire under control in about 10 minutes, containing it to a single room.

Firefighters were assisted by the Gaston Police Department, Northampton County Sheriff's Office and Northampton EMS.

Additional details will be released later.
